The NJ Appellate Division delivered a major victory to advocates of police-department transparency. In re Att’y Gen. Law Enf’t Directive Nos. 2020-5 and 2020-6 involved a challenge by several police unions to the Attorney General’s directives requiring certain agencies to publish a synopsis of all complaints in which a police officer received final discipline of termination, demotion, or a suspension of more than five days, including the name of the officer, a summary of the misconduct, and the sanction imposed. The Appellate Division upheld the AG’s directives.
